During pregnancy, the immune system and hormone levels undergo changes that make women more vulnerable to infections.
Some parts of the immune system are enhanced while others are suppressed to protect the growing baby.
This delicate balance prevents the mother’s body from rejecting the baby while still providing defense against infections.
Along with immune changes, certain changes in the urinary and respiratory systems also increase susceptibility to infections such as urinary tract infections (UTIs) and pneumonia.
The most common infections that may occur during pregnancy include:
Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
Vaginitis
TORCH infections (Toxoplasmosis, Rubella, Cytomegalovirus, Herpes)
Parvovirus infection
Syphilis
Listeriosis
HIV
Hepatitis
Group B Streptococcus (GBS)
Risks for the Mother
UTIs, vaginitis, and postpartum infections can cause discomfort and health problems for the mother.
Risks for the Baby
Some infections like cytomegalovirus, toxoplasmosis, and parvovirus may cross the placenta and infect the baby, sometimes leading to serious complications.
Many infections during pregnancy can be prevented with simple precautions:
Wash hands regularly with soap and water.
Avoid undercooked meat.
Do not consume unpasteurized or raw dairy products.
Avoid changing cat litter and stay away from wild or pet rodents.
Do not share utensils, cups, or food with others.
Ensure your vaccinations are up to date.
Consult your doctor immediately if you feel unwell or have been exposed to a contagious disease. Early diagnosis and treatment improve outcomes for both mother and baby.
