What is an Ectopic Pregnancy?

An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg implants and grows outside the uterus, most commonly in the fallopian tubes. This is why it is often referred to as a tubal pregnancy. In rare cases, it may also develop in the ovaries, cervix, abdominal cavity, or a previous cesarean scar.
Though rare (seen in about 2% of pregnancies), ectopic pregnancies are dangerous if untreated, as a growing pregnancy can rupture the tube, causing internal bleeding, shock, and even death.

Who is at Risk?

The exact cause isn’t always clear, but the risk increases if you:

  • Have had a sexually transmitted infection (STI), pelvic inflammatory disease, or ovarian cysts

  • Have experienced an ectopic pregnancy in the past

  • Have undergone pelvic or abdominal surgery

  • Are over 35 years of age

  • Smoke cigarettes

  • Conceive after sterilization or with an IUD in place

Can You Conceive Again After an Ectopic Pregnancy?

Yes. Many women go on to have healthy pregnancies after an ectopic pregnancy. Even one healthy fallopian tube is enough to achieve a normal pregnancy. However, the chances of a repeat ectopic pregnancy increase if the tubes are scarred or damaged.

How is Ectopic Pregnancy Diagnosed?

There is no self-test to confirm ectopic pregnancy. Diagnosis requires:

  • Pelvic examination

  • Blood tests (HCG levels)

  • Ultrasound scan

If you have any doubt about your pregnancy, consult Dr. Manasi Thakur immediately for proper evaluat

Symptoms of an Ectopic Pregnancy

Early ectopic pregnancy may mimic a normal pregnancy, but specific symptoms include:

  • Severe abdominal or pelvic pain (especially on one side)

  • Vaginal bleeding or spotting after a missed period

  • Shoulder pain (due to internal bleeding irritation)

  • Weakness, dizziness, or fainting

⚠️ Severe pain or heavy bleeding after a missed period is a medical emergency. Visit the hospital immediately.

Treatment Options

  1. Medical Management

    • In early cases, Methotrexate injection is used to stop the ongoing pregnancy.

    • Multiple doses may be required.

    • The tissue is naturally absorbed by the body.

    • Advantage: Fallopian tubes are not damaged.

  2. Surgical Management

    • Laparoscopy is the preferred option.

    • A small cut near the belly button is made to remove the pregnancy.

    • If the tube is severely damaged, it may be removed.

    • Benefits: Safe, minimally invasive, faster recovery.

Life After an Ectopic Pregnancy

Experiencing an ectopic pregnancy can be emotionally challenging. Feelings of shock, grief, fear, or disappointment are normal, especially if the pregnancy was planned. Over time, these emotions reduce, and with the right support and medical care, most women can look forward to healthy pregnancies in the future.
