Hysteroscopic Polypectomy is a surgical procedure in which uterine polyps are removed using a hysteroscope. Polyps are non-cancerous overgrowths of cells lining the inner wall of the uterus.
It is a minor surgery with minimal complications but can bring great relief to women suffering from heavy bleeding or pelvic pain due to polyps.
Hysteroscopic polypectomy is usually a daycare procedure. After the surgery, you will be kept under observation for a few hours before being discharged. Antibiotics and painkillers are prescribed for about a week. Complete recovery usually takes around 2 weeks.
During recovery, you might experience:
Cramping pain – Similar to menstrual cramps, which usually subsides in a few days. Medications like mefenamic acid and drotaverine may be advised.
Bleeding – Can last up to a week. Small tissue fragments may also be expelled. Using sanitary pads instead of tampons reduces infection risk.
Contact your doctor immediately if you experience:
Severe abdominal pain
Heavy or prolonged bleeding
Fever
Foul-smelling vaginal discharge
Though uncommon, risks may include:
Uterine perforation (very rare but serious)
Heavy bleeding
Infection
Incomplete removal of the polyp
The main advantages of hysteroscopic polypectomy are:
Accurate diagnosis
Minimally invasive procedure
Faster recovery
Short hospital stay
